Earrings

The weather is still really nice here, so I've been out in the shop more than usual. I've really been trying to pull out some beads that I'm not sure why I purchased!?! Not because I don't like them, I do, but they are colors that I struggle with. Namely pink, I just don't do pink. So with Valentine's Day around the corner, I went with pink and hearts.

These are the earrings that I created for the 52 Pairs of Earrings a Year group. The hearts are sawed out of sterling silver then textured. The hearts dangle beneath a wire wrapped pastel pink lampwork disc. The earrings are oxidized, which really makes them look so much nicer. I like the contrast in color, the light pink against the dark wire.

I'm still not digging all the pink beads I have, what was I thinking! (banging head again the table). But I'm happy with the outcome of these earrings!

Just to Nice Not Too

Typically in January I like to "take off" from creating any new jewelry. You know, to catch up on house work that has been neglected since before the holidays, work on tax stuff, and in general to have a little down time with no deadlines or upcoming shows, plus it's usually freezing out in my shop. However, these last couple of days we have been experiencing some unseasonably warm temperatures. Today especially, 55 degrees and sunny! Just gorgeous for the end of January! I took this opportunity to get out in my shop, with the doors and windows open, to work on some new pieces. Today's outing was totally unplanned, there were not any sketches or ideas about what I wanted to start, and my bench was a complete disaster! I sat for a few minutes, completely uninspired. Then, I started to straighten up, and low and behold there were beads and links I had forgotten about and the clean up session quickly moved into a creation. Love it when that happens!

So glad that I had the chance to go out and create with no pressure or feeling like I should be doing something else. How about you, do you like to create on a whim or do you like to have an idea in mind, even if it changes midstream? I'd love to know.

Earrings A Pair a Week

One thing I can't live without is earrings. There are some things I just don't do and running around without earrings is one of them. I even keep an extra pair in my car, just in case. So, they other evening on Kristi Bowman's blog, she showcased a pair of earrings that she had created for a Flickr group she joined, 52 Pairs of Earrings A Year. The group is open to anyone and the goal is to make more art - regularly, specifically earrings. This suits me perfectly! So I joined (a little late) and hope to post at least one pair of earrings a week.

My preference for earrings is something simple, all metal, not to big, not too small, a pair that I can put on with any outfit and just go. So this is my first pair for this year. They are in my Etsy shop, but these are just my style.

Good to Be Back

Dear! I can hardly believe it's been 2 whole months since my last post! And equally as long since I've checked in on any of the blogs that I follow, or don't follow, at this point. I know I've missed a lot, including signing up to participate in the BSBP, but hopefully I'll catch up in the next week or so.

There is no excuse for my absence except that there don't seem to be enough hours in the day. I kept busy through the holidays, but since then I've been doing a lot of reading and some crochet. I've also been trying to get some pieces listed in my Etsy shop, which has proved to be a little bit of a learning curve, to get noticed. At any rate, I'm excited to get back to blogging and following. I can't wait to see what you've been up to and share what I've been doing.

Business

The majority of today was spent attending to the business end of creating. That would be the part that I don't like...photographing, editing, tagging, and pricing my new pieces.

This week I've been spending some quality, not quantity, time in the workshop! I am a member of the Southeastern Delaware Artists Studio Tour, which is a self guided tour of local artist studios, open the weekend of Thanksgiving. While, I'm feeling a little ill prepared...which always seems to be the case...I really want to present some pieces that I've created out of pure enjoyment, and not necessarily prepare for the masses. This means that some pieces are just a little different than what I usually create, but fabulous nonetheless.

I'm also trying to stay on top of adding a couple new items a week to my Etsy shop. This week it's earrings

Playing Catch Up

Can you believe it's November?!? I feel like I've lost days. Does anyone else have this same problem? I'm sure I'm not alone. Anyway, I wanted to share the bracelet that was published in the glossy pages of Bead Trends. Unfortunately, I'm a little late with this, as it was in October issue.

This bracelet was a last minute submission. Of course, it was made several months ago, and I wasn't working with any plan in mind. Just putting beads together and "playing" with the wire, trying to get out of a slump. I was super happy with the outcome of the bracelet! It reminded me of fall, dusk settling in with a big harvest moon peeking through the tree tops.

The bracelet was barely finished when it had to be sent away. So I was happy to see it arrive safely home and getting in back in the fall made me appreciate it even more.

To Clean or Not To Clean

That is the question? I mean, can anybody really work in this mess?

Well, apparently I can...and very well, at that! Thank goodness this disarray doesn't carry over into my home.

It was a super productive day in the workshop. Before I started today, I set a goal for myself and a time limit...and ta da, success! I love it when everything works out so perfectly. And another little sign that all the planets were aligned today...I was getting ready to drill holes in these birds I sawed out, placing them side by side so as to mark the holes in about the same spot, a sign...do you see it?

I know it's upside down and all, but the wings form a heart! Love the little things!

Going to Market

A First

A couple weeks ago, I posted that a fellow jewelry artist had referred one of her clients to me. The client had a shell, that held special meaning to her, from a trip to Hawaii. She wanted the shell set, so that she could wear it as a pendant. I was anxious to get to work on getting the shell pendant done, but at the same time I was nervous due to the fragile nature of the shell.

The pendant is finished with no problems...thank goodness, and I'm really happy with the outcome.

Unfortunately, I delivered the finished pendant to an empty porch. Due to both the client and I having busy schedules, we were unable to meet so that I could give her the pendant. I hope that she is as happy with the results as I am.

I Got Sucked In

Typically I'm not one to really follow trends or the latest craze, but I fell into the latest feather frenzy. At the last art show, I was chit chatting and checking out my friend Dawn's newest jewelry creations, when a pair of earrings caught my eye.

The discs are dapped and enameled and she created a feather dangle with a spiral. Super cute...yes? They get lots of wear!

So I've been forced to eat my words, when I said that the feather "thing" is just nuts and I'll never "do" feathers. Never say never...

What I am a sucker for is handmade soap. I love this soap and I purchase several bars every year from Honey Bee Lake Apiaries.

It's made locally, using honey from her bees. Only problem is...I only see them at this art show and they don't have a website so when I'm out, it's for a long time : ( This year I was smart and got her phone number so I can replenish, amazing what happens when I use my head, LOL!

Purchases and getting to know other local artists is what I love about exhibiting in smaller shows. What about you? Do you prefer the bigger shows where there are a lot more attendees or smaller more intimate shows?

Weekend and New Work

It was a fabulous weekend!

I had a excellent show on Saturday! The arts festival coincided with the towns sidewalk sale, and perfect weather conditions had people out in droves. I even made a few purchases myself (which I'll share in my next post). It really was a wonderful day! Then more of the same on Sunday...wonderful weather, and spending time with the family. But working up to the weekend, I kept myself busy creating some new pieces.

Show Recap

My dear...October came roaring in! We went from shorts and t-shirts on Friday to jeans and sweaters on Saturday. This totally threw me for a loop! I had a show on Saturday and dressed for the 65 degree weather, not considering the wind and froze. But at least shivering burns calories, right?

The show was more of a craft fair/family day. There were not a lot of sales, but I did get some commissioned work. I had the opportunity to talk to people I haven't seen in a while, as well as people I see regularly, and met a lot of new folks. It was a spendid community affair. One lady, relinquished her beloved shell that she picked up from her trip to Hawaii. She explained to me how special the shell is to her and entrusted me to create a simple pendant for her. It's going to be bezel set, I'm excited (and nervous) about creating something special for her...I'll be sure to share the outcome. One of the few sales was this ring that I recently finished.

This was my first experience trying to set two stones on one piece. Of course it was my new favorite! It's not perfect but I put it out none the less and it was the first to go! I have a feeling I'll be creating some more similar to this ring.

There is another local show to look forward to this coming weekend. I've done this show before and typically it's pretty good. They do a great job with PR, and once again I'll get to see myself and my work, in the local paper. This is great, considering the holidays are coming!

As the shows wind down for the year, I look forward to getting out into my shop and being able to create at my own free will, without wondering if I have enough pieces to present. Of course, then I have plenty of time to test drive a new favorite too.

Wandering

Today is one of those days...half the day has passed and I've gotten nothing done! Went to the gym this morning and had a great workout and now, I'm a little tired, or maybe it just seems so because it's overcast out. I have wandered around aimlessly all morning, knowing full well what's on the "to do" list, considering where to begin, but alas, I've not tackled anything.

Thank goodness, it was a productive weekend! There were some orders that needed to get done and in the mail for my findings shop, as well as a couple custom orders from the last art show.

One client wanted a sterling silver, beach themed bracelet in browns. This bracelet came together fabulously! Lots of different hues of browns, makes it really versatile, and perfect for autumn!

This pendant matches a pair of earrings that sold during the show. I love how different this is.

Now to get out of this funk...
Do you have days like this? Where you just can't seem to get out of your own way? They are few and far between but very frustrating for me...especially when I'm busy.

September and Show Recap

I sit here now thinking about how much I love September, and can hardly believe that the middle of the month is upon us. There is so much about September that I enjoy.

I love the transition of the season, holding onto the last bit of summer with the brisk mornings and warmer afternoons. The beach is a dream, the crowds are minimal, and the water is still warm, but no lifeguards (that stinks!) With the return of school, a chance to get back to a schedule after the chaos of summer, not saying that once school starts it's not just a chaotic...just scheduled chaos. And with the chaos of summer, I rarely have the chance to visit my bench : ( so with the welcoming of September I can get back out to my shop! This is great, considering most of my shows fall between September and November.

This past weekend, was one of the largest shows I participate in. It was a great success! The weather was wonderful, and the show was well attended. Being that my blog has been on hiatus, and I haven't shared many of my new pieces lately, I thought I'd share some of the pieces that found new homes over the weekend.

Are you seeing a pattern here? It seemed to be a blue, green kinda day.

Now, back to to enjoying September, which includes new work : )

Back to Normal

Seems I got a little carried away with summer! My blog was totally neglected, I didn't take the time to keep up with the blogs I follow, and the only thing visiting my workbench were the crickets and spiders, but all in all, that worked out to be totally fine!

There were several art shows, none a huge success...tears...but every little bit counts, right? Rainy, 100+ temps., and more bad weather kept the attendees away. But, I'm hoping for a really great show this weekend! Keeping my fingers crossed!

The best part...Spent lots of time, with the fam, at our place in PA.

With September comes a little more structure. We will all go back to work and school, saving the play for the weekend. However, this will allow me to spend more time in my shop, and I will be able to get back to some type of normal schedule.

I'm looking forward to catching up with my blogging buddies, but I still can't believe it's already September and the summer has once again slipped by. How about you?

I Heart Metal

Enough complaining! I'm moving onward and upward.

I have really enjoyed the metalsmithing sessions I've been taking for the last couple of months. I have learned so much and there is so much more to learn. However, tomorrow will be my last session for the summer. So sad : ( It's just to difficult for me to line up a sitter, and make the time to work on projects between classes. But, the break will be brief...just for the summer. Then in September, I'll be back at it! The sessions that is, as I'll be working on metalsmithing projects, or any new projects for that matter, when I have a chance.

Can't Win Them All

I've finally recovered from the show I exhibited in this past weekend. I hate to complain but...it stunk like bacon out loud! Really! In years past I've attending the art show as a spectator, and it's always been a nice show so this year I wanted to exhibit, even though it required me being there on Father's Day.

Friday was set up. This makes it nice because all the hard work is out of the way. However, me being such the planner that I am, the weather Friday night was a little iffy, so I opted to only set up my tent and tables. Good thing! A terrible thunderstorm blew through on Friday night, so bad that I scooted on down to the park to find out how my tent fared through all the wind. I was lucky, others not so much! There were tents blown over and in crumpled piles.

Saturday...rain to start, but it cleared off and the temps quickly climbed to a balmy 91 degrees. There didn't seem to be many people in attendance, surely not the 10,000 they touted! But there were some fabulous artists! I was really disappointed when I left on Saturday, but I tried to remain optimistic for Sunday.

Sunday...more rain! Once again, it finally cleared off around 11:00, still a little overcast but otherwise nice. People came, but not the expected crowd, however my excitement for the day was when Melissa Meman visited. I was ecstatic to see her and her family, and of course I wasn't busy so we had a chance for a brief chat. Later in the afternoon, it started to rain again. I made the decision to leave early. Normally I would never leave a show early, but with the rain and lack of sales, I was very discouraged!

The one thing I was happy with, were the tweaks that I made to my booth. I changed around where I positioned the tables and used most of the same displays. I really liked the set up a lot better. I made myself my own private space.

Looking back I begin to question, whether the show was well advertised and promoted? was it the weather, too hot and rainy? is the lack of attendance because of the economy? And the biggest question of all...Will I reapply for this show next year?

Hoping for a better show next month.

A Change in Pace

I'm really looking forward to a break! This is the first year that we really don't have any definite plans...as of now, the kids are not enrolled in any camps, and there are no trips planned. We're just gonna relax, and go with it.

Hopefully, I'll still be able to steal away, a few hours each week to make jewelry. Keeping my fingers crossed! I do have a couple of shows. One being this weekend...Arts Alive in Ocean City, MD. This is a great show, in a beautiful setting.

Do You Test Drive Your Jewelry?

You know the moment...you finish a piece, you get all gitty with excitement, and your over the moon with it? I'm not talking about every new piece of jewelry you create, but the one that you contemplate keeping...when you really shouldn't...you know, the one you LOVE, Love, love. Do you give it a test drive? It's not often, but I do. And here lately, I've been test driving a lot!

People can be particular, so I always let them know that I've worn the piece. There are lots of advantages to wearing your jewelry out and about before selling it. First and foremost there is the marketing, I always try to carry my business cards, especially if I'm wearing something I made, and the comments make my heart smile. If it's a new design, wearing it can help to work out the kinks. Finally, while your sporting your new fav around town, you realize that others are equally enchanted with the piece. Often, when I have a show in the near future, I clean the piece and put it out for sale...even if sometimes I secretly wish for it not to sell.

BTW Malfunction

It's the same ole racket...there just aren't enough hours in the day, so my blog is suffering. I was bound and determined to post today, at least try to get back in the grove and what better time to jump back in and show what's on my bead table. Sounds like a great idea, right?...except that when I got around to photographing my bead table, the battery in my camera? Dead! Ugh!

Moving on to Plan B...instead here are a couple pieces that were recently finished, just in time for the craft show I exhibited in this past weekend.

I really like this style bracelet-the charms and a nice big hook clasp. I made this bangle so that I could "destash" my bead table, if you will, except for the starfish. I sawed it out...practice, practice.

I love Nan from Spirited Earth pieces. There are many times I've pulled out one of my coveted pendants to use, rubbed it a few dozen times, and decided that I wasn't ready to part with the pendant yet. Crazy right?! But this time, it was different...I was ready, and I've been on a starfish kick lately. Besides, I can always get more, yes?

These earrings were made to go with the above necklace. I'm wiped out of the lovely Thai starfish, so once again I made my own.

Finally, these earring (below) were donated for the Chinese auction. My little sister put all her tickets in to try and win them...no dice:( BUT...I know someone else will enjoy them.

I've been going crazy lately texturing metal discs, but that's for another post.

Hopefully I can get back to my blog again this week.

A Wedding, Jewelry & A Birthday

Where does the time go? The days all seem to run together with short intervals of sleep in between. It's Monday, then Friday, the weekend slips by, then Monday again...and round and round I go, as precious time slips by. Does time seem to slip by like this for you too?

As this past weekend slipped by, friends and family gathered for my cousins wedding. I was honored when she asked that I make her jewelry to wear on her wedding day. She was gorgeous!

A simple crystal and pearl necklace, and earrings with lots of bling.

And, my daughter was all too excited about being the flower girl. She was beautiful as well! Of course, I'm a little partial :)

While time has been slipping by, my baby boy has grown up right before my very eyes! Tomorrow is Caleb's 10th birthday! I can hardly believe it! Double digits!

More Metal

I haven't chatted about it lately but I'm still loving the metalsmithing. Still taking classes, and trying to figure how I'll get my session in once the kids get out of school. Here's a peek at some of the pieces I've finished as of recent...

The stone for this necklace is a beautiful Apatite. It's the most beautiful shade of blue. I love, love this necklace, but can't keep 'em all, right?

I cut out the back on this pendant, the back of the stone is as pretty as the front.

Prehnite earrings, this is my first pair of earrings. I'm looking forward to making a couple more pairs, with different stones of course.

I've got some more metalwork projects in the mix. They are a little more time consuming to complete, and once I get started I don't want to stop, so I have to pace myself.

What's Old?

The Artbeads.com challenge this go around is "What's Old is New Again." A true challenge for me! The criteria is to use something old in your project. While I enjoy antiquing and love the look of jewelry pieces that are made using vintage items, I've never actually incorporated any "older" items in my work. I hemmed and hawed about this challenge, and maybe even considered not participating...crazy huh?!? So I decided to put the challenge on the back burner for a couple of days, get my thoughts together, and face this challenge head on! One vintage style piece coming up.

Key to my Heart

The first order of business was to come up with a vintage item to incorporate into my piece. Instead of scouring the internet for something, I turned to Artbeads.com. They have these fabulous, retro style beads that I used as the focal. It's two pieces that are wired together, a picture of a heart lock on one side and a key on the other. And, be sure the check out their great selection of TierraCast charms. I decided on the black tone heart lock and key charms to complement the focal bead.

And how can you not think of crystals when making a vintage piece. These Swarovski polygons give the necklace a pop of color and I love the shape.

Even though I got off to a rocky start with this challenge, I'm super happy that I pulled on my big girl pants and participated in this challenge.

A Follow Up

Every once in a while, I get half crazy, rip my house apart, so that I can clean, sort and most important throw away! That's where I am right now, so no Bead Table Wednesday today. Instead I thought I'd share the bracelet I finished from last weeks BTW.

Giving Back

A couple weeks ago, I was asked to donate an item for a silent auction to benefit La Red. It's impossible to contribute to every organization that requests a donation, although I try to give as much as possible, even if it's a small item.
For this event, I've donated these two pair of earrings.

These earrings were a treat to create. I was totally entranced once I began...forging the metal, adding texture, the beads, and the curly vine, everything just flowed.

These are just a simple pair of enameled earrings.

Contributing is a great way, for me as an artist, to give back to my community. I'm honored to be asked, and happy to contribute. Hopefully, these earrings will help in La Red's fundraising efforts.

I might slip out without wearing a necklace or bracelet, but not earrings. The earrings go on when I get dressed and come off at bedtime. Just can't live without them! So, this would explain why I love to create earrings, they are a major part of who I am.

Hello Again

I know what you must be thinking...something terrible has happened to Shelby...yes?, well actually, no. I'm still here, busy as a little bee, making sure that deadlines are met and making new pieces for upcoming shows. It's been tough though, as previously posted I've been smacked down by seasonal allergies, and as I'm sure you know, it's really hard to concentrate on the task at hand with a headache and a multitude of other symptoms...I'll save you the details. Please excuse Shelby for being absent from her blogging community, and life in general, last week. I've had a strong hold on her all week. She's been unable to function properly as I cause her to have labored breathing, scratch her eyes out of her head, and make her head feel like it will explode, and I'm only getting started...but lucky for her the Zyrtec is starting to kick in and relieve her symptoms.

I always know it's spring, when the weather starts to warm, the calendar starts to fill with important happenings, and I'm flitting about buzzing here and there, hoping to get a little more done today than yesterday. Although that wasn't what was going on when I created these earrings, but merely dreaming of spring to come, yet again.

Believe it or not, I had totally forgotten that I sent these little beauties away until they once again arrived on my doorstep. I'm really fond of the little bee, but my favorite component of these earrings...the little sterling silver do-da's, love 'em!

Different Colors

Here's a peek at my bead table, not the colors I would ordinarily choose. Maybe it's the fact that spring is finally starting to arrive, maybe I'm delusional from the pollen, or maybe it's because I had to change my filthy bead pad for a new, and the only color available is pink...I'm totally not a pink girl! One will never know but this is what is on the bench.

Almost got this finished today, hopefully next week I can share.

As promised, here are a few pictures of the gorgeous cabs and beads, I picked up during BeadFest. The photo just doesn't do these beautys justice.

Ramblings

I'm being pulled in about twenty different directions, as a result, my blog is suffering:( Anywho, this is what I've been up to the past couple of days...

this past Friday, I traveled to BeadFest. I had the pleasure of finally meeting Barbara from Painting with Fire, and while watching her demo, I ran into Jenny from Jenny Davies Reazor and Marsha of Marsha Neal Studio. Yea! I always love seeing people unexpectedly. The show was good, it's been better, but beggers can't be choosers, and I prefer to see, feel, touch what I buy...you understand, yes? Didn't get many beads at all, but I did get some yummy cabs! Pictures to come, but this is one of the stones that I scooped up, and ta-da...a wonderful ring just in time for summer! Love it!

Sterling Silver Amazonite Ring

Recall the disaster from last week BTW? It's going to be fabulous! but it might take a while.

Otherwise, I've just been trying to catch up, ordering materials...ouch!, writing tidbits for press releases, attending to show details, packaging and sending orders...the boring business end of things, and that doesn't include my personal life details, and of course cleaning my house. There's a lot going on, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that I can make it out the shop this week.

Today's bead table Wednesday was nothing short of a disaster!

When I started this beautiful natural Amethyst cab was in one piece. Now...not so much, but I'm gonna try and salvage it. Wish me luck! I'll let you know how it turns out.

Fusing

Not too long ago, Sharon at Sharon's Garden Jewelry, was giving away a class from beaducation. Lucky me, I was so fortunate to win! Yipee! I choose the Intro to Fusing class with Kriss Silva. I've done fusing in the past, but I always like to see other artist techniques or hear their tips. I've learned so much this way, so many helpful tidbits can be learned in a class that usually are just not possible to convey in a publication.

This class was chocked full of great tips for beginners. She thoroughly explained the different types of butane torches, and why she does "things" the way she does them. After viewing the class, I was inspired to create my own bracelet.

I'm not quite sure if I'm done with this bracelet or not. Oxidation is always a big decision for me, crazy I know, but I tend to over think the simple things. But, I'm thinking that it would really make the texture stand out. We'll see...hummm.

It's a dreary day out, I'm feeling uninspired, and there is a ton of paperwork that needs to be attended too. So for today's bead table Wednesday, I'm not at my bench at all, instead I'm sitting at the kitchen table, doing the dreaded naming, pricing, and tagging pieces that are finished.

It might not be attractive, but it has to be done, and I'll feel a huge sense of accomplishment at the end of the day.

More Metal Monday

Yesterday, we woke to white stuff on the ground...crazy! Hubby was home, and the kids were engrossed in a movie, so I ceased the opportunity and slipped out to the workshop. It was freezing but I'd rather play with metal than watch tv, or better yet, clean.

I've been in search for some really great cabs to set. As a result, I've discovered lots of great shops on etsy, that have fabulous stones. Although, I'd rather see and touch the stone before purchasing, I have yet to be disappointed. One of my purchases was this Willow Creek Jasper from StepheezGems. She has lots of great cabochons, if your in the market.

I had a devil of a time with this pendant...good thing I was working solo. This isn't exactly the way I had sketched the back out, there was suppose to be a few wavy wire pieces, but they were not cooperating. Instead of having a full on temper tantrum, and risking loosing this big piece of silver...yikes!...I settled for sawing the curve instead. I'm still thrilled with the way it turned out.

Finally, a great everyday ring. This is nice and simple. I textured and domed a sterling disc, then set it. Super cool!

Metalsmithing

I've been M.I.A. lately in the blog world. With the coming of spring, life picks up a little more hectic pace. We headed out of town while the kids were on spring break, softball has begun, and I'm frantically trying to kick it into high gear so that I'll be ready for upcoming art shows.

Today will be another hectic day, but I wanted to drop in and share a few metalwork projects that I've finished. I'm totally, lovin' doing metalsmithing. There is SO much to learn!

Peruvian Opal Pendant

I love, love this pendant and can't wait to get a chain so that it can be worn. However, this setting set me in a fit everytime I worked on it! The flower petals and cut out back...I was probably a little ambitious to start with something like this, but it's done, gorgeous, and I love it!

I'm unsure what this stone is, any ideas? I purchased it quite a while ago. Anyway, I'm not quite done with this. It looks kinda blah right now, but there will be colorful dangles on the bottom loops, and of course chain. I forgot to photograph the back, but I there is lots of scrollwork. More photos when this is finished.

Here's another...don't know the stone, ugh! Love this too! I wear it all the time! Copper back sheet and silver balls. This is the first piece I completed entirely on my own. To say the least I was giddy with excitement when it was finished and realized...I. Can. Do. It! Yea!

Cool Winter's Night & Empty Beaches

There is not much I like better, than to be outside on a brisk winter's night gazing up at the sky. The cool against my face, seeing my breath, staring up, taking in the bright light of the moon, the twinkle of the stars against the dark sky. This time for me is so peaceful and relaxing.

So when Artbeads.com declared this months inspiration "Winter Enchantment," I knew right away that I wanted to design a necklace with a cool, winter's night in mind. A Swarovski Cosmic ring and sterling silver disc were layered for the pendant. This represents the moon in all it's glory, you know the nights when it's so bright that it creates a wonderful halo. Swarovski pearls, Swarovski crystals, and sterling silver discs make up the chain of the necklace. Again, the dark midnight sky, twinkling stars, and a wispy cloud here and there. This necklace was such a joy to create. It put me in my happy place and the designed seemed to flow from me. I must admit, upon opening the package, I wasn't sure I had made the right color choices, however now that the necklace is done, I think the colors were right on.

Star Gazer

The other thing that I love in the winter is empty beaches. There is almost nobody around, it is possible to take long walks on the beach and not encounter another soul. It's absolutely delightful! Just you alone with your thoughts, miles of sand, and the crashing waves. This bracelet represents just that.

Ivory Czech beads are paired with hand-dyed silk and oxidized copper wire, and the blue porcelain beads add a splash of color.

I'm so lame...with all the time I've been spending at the computer this week browsing Bead Soup Blog Party reveals, I haven't felt much like blogging myself. Lots of goodies out there, and I'm still hopping, so hold tight if I haven't visited you yet. Next party has been planned

I'm making great success in the metalsmith sessions...Yea! I've finally finished a couple pieces...stay tuned.

I've been sitting on my Artbeads.com, Winter Enchantment post...need to get that wrapped up.

Been making buttons like crazy at my findings shop! I'm all buttoned out, and took a break this week. Plus, I need to order more silver sheet, so I can make more...Yikes!

Saturday is my baby girls birthday...she'll be 8...hard to believe. Time does fly. Having six girls over for a sleepover...correction, they won't sleep.

Party On

And what to my wondering eyes should appear...but lots of bead soup goodies.

Myself and about 209 other people are participating in the largest Bead Soup Blog Party yet! Woohoo! This is Lori Anderson at Pretty Things brainchild. And how grateful we all are for her:) I can't begin to imagine how much work this entailed. So here goes, we were all partnered up and asked to send our partner a focal, nice clasp, and coordinating beads

with the requirement that we use the focal and the clasp

and we could use anything else we wished.

My bead soup partner is Kristi Bowman-Gruel. She sent this beautiful bronze clay butterfly, that she hand crafted, a wood toggle clasp, lovely lampwork beads by AspenHotGlass, wood rondelles, faceted carnelian, picture jasper, and faceted Chinese picture jasper. Lots of beauties!

I knew right away, that I wanted to pair the butterfly pendant with a wonderful springy color. After all, I can't wait until spring to see the butterflies again. I dug through my lampwork beads and found some that were fuchsia with hints of brown and golden, perfect to go with the bronze butterfly, and the picture jasper.

A longish necklace was in order. I broke out the brass wire...that I've never used, blackened it, and went to town creating links, and wire wrapping. This is the first time ever using brass wire, and it was a bit of a learning curve at first. Brass is so much harder than sterling or copper, the heavier gauges really gave my fingers a workout!

Next up was the toggle clasp. This little sucker gave me a lot of headache! It's big, bold, and golly day, that's a small hole in the middle. The little hole is what caused me much of my frustration. And, let's just say, I'm not a patient person! Normally when something doesn't work the first time...it gets pushed to the back of the bench possibly never to be seen again. However, that wasn't really an option now was it? Finally, after several times of fiddling with the bar, and contemplating drill the hole to make it larger, I had a eureka moment! Ta-Da!

For this bracelet, I also used the carnelian and a couple of the lampwork beads that came with my soup.

I'm thrilled with the necklace, and the bracelet. And, I have plenty of leftovers...yum!...but I'll be sure to use them in another project. You'll see:)

BTW & Dinner

I'm totally loving Bead Table Wednesdays! It's keeping me motivated and on my toes! I love having to show what I'm working on, with the anticipation that in a few short days, I'll have a project finished and ready to share. However, that has not been the case. So today, this is what my bead mat looks like.

There are a couple of projects half done that I am determined to finish today!...I think I can....I think I can, and lots of components to make. It is my hope that since I'm showing this today that I will have both of these projects finished before the next btw.

On a different note...much to my daughters dismay, we went to B&N last week to pick out some new books. She does. not. like. to. read. but she does love to cook. This time she found a cookbook by Paula Deen for kids. I had suggested that maybe she could cook us dinner, with my help of course, one night a week from her new cookbook. She was giddy with excitement! So tonight was the first night and she had a blast...baked potatoes and fruit kabobs. Yum!

We're definitely gonna have to do this again:)

The Good, Bad & Ugly

Ugly first...Ouch!! I mean, has anybody checked the $$ of silver lately? That's ugly! Last week, I placed a small order. Then silver was at $30. and change, and now it's above $33. Really? It's gone up over three dollars in less than a week. Prices keep going like this and I'm wondering...Are people going to pay those prices? Or do without?

Bad...I know what your saying...use copper or brass, right? But, that seems to be a hard sell for the shows I participate in. A lot of the clientele want sterling or gold. Not to say that I don't sell any copper pieces, just not nearly as many.

So this big increase in metal prices is leaving me a little anxious about this year's show season. I need to brainstorm, and come up with some creative ideas on how to use less sterling so that my price point will not sky rocket as well.

The good in all this you ask? Last week...the same day that I placed my order, I sent in all my sterling scrap. All 10.5 ounces of it, which leaves me a nice little bonus the next time I do place an order for silver. Yipee!

Which leaves me with this question for you. How are you becoming creative at keeping costs low during this madness?

Friday evening, we will be attending the Worcester Prep Gala at Seacrets in Ocean City, MD. This is WPS's biggest fundraiser of the year, and since this is where my kids attend school, we are more than happy to attend. This year they asked if I'd be interested in donating a piece of jewelry. Of course! I was excited about donating an item, but a little nervous as well. Nervous because I'm not really good at marketing myself and my jewelry to people I know, or people my kids know. It's so much easier for me to try and sell to the unknown, or people who I've developed a relationship with through my business. Weird, yes? I don't know, it's just how I am. At any rate, I've donated, what I think is a wonderfully, beautiful bracelet, lots of oxidized sterling silver, and lovely lampwork beads.

I'm hopeful that this piece is well received by those in attendance, and it will bring in a little $$ for the school.

It's been a fabulously productive week! The temps warmed, so I was able to really get to work out in the workshop quite a bit. The way I see it...I'll be spending a lot more time out there, so a HUGE cleaning was in order! And, I got to work making several new bracelets.

Your Thoughts?

Alas, the sun has come out so that I can photograph a necklace I've finished, more importantly get your thoughts. I've gone round and round with the focal of this necklace. I was trying to accomplish a coiled, leaf shape around the lampwork bead. However, upon finishing it, I realized...do you see it?

The crook at the base of the leaf is off center...ugh! So then I fiddled, and fiddled some more but couldn't get it to look more centered. So now after all the fiddling, don't you think it looks kinda lopsided? So this leaves me in a quandary...do I scrap the wire around the lampwork bead and try again? Oooo...cringe at the thought of wasting the silver. Then my hubby says the wire wrapping takes away from the bead...you think? Is less, more? My personal opinion is, I don't think it looks terrible, but am I happy enough with it to put out for sale? I don't know...what do you think?

On another note, today is our anniversary. This week hubby has been working "over the bridge," so last night he brought home these beautiful daffodils

Workin', Workin'

I'm sure you've heard by now, Heather at Humblebeads came up with a great idea of showing a glimpse of what is on your bench on Wednesdays...Bead Table Wednesdays. It has been going since the beginning of the year, but this is my first "show." I always want to participate, but loose track of time, and by the time I think of it again, Wednesday has come and gone. So this week, I marked it on my calendar and was sure to take a quick picture as I worked on a new project today.

Okay, so this is not a very good picture, it was really, really cloudy today, but this is what I was working on. These great cranberry colored lampwork beads with a silvery gray swirl, faceted black quartz, and of course some coiled sterling silver wire. I didn't get this project finished today, but hopefully soon, so that I can share it with you.

It's been a pretty productive week! And my muse is sitting right on my shoulder, yea! Gotta try to make up for last week. Waiting for the sun to come out, so that I can take photos of some new pieces...and I need your opinion, but that's for another day.

Did I Miss Something?

Last week was kinda a blur...Where did it go? I'm sitting here now, thinking...what did I do last week? I don't know, but that time has come and gone, and there are SO many ticks on my "to do" list from last week that I'm having to carry forward to this week...and that can't be good.

I did have a metalsmithing session last week, my third...and no project done yet! GRRRR! I was totally anticipating having the ring that I'm working on done. But, just so happens that while filing and area on the back, you know the part you don't see, I scratched the crap out of the silver. UGH! I was SO irritated with myself! So there I was, more sanding and polishing. No session this week, but I will totally have that ring DONE next session. Just a little more polishing which I'm going to work on at home and then bezel. Yipee! The pendant that I'm working on is pretty close too. The little petals that I wanted to do, I really like...but man, am I cussing them too. Maybe a little too ambitious for my first pendant. But it will look great when it's done.

Unfortunately, no new pieces last week, so this week I'm burning the midnight oil. A local gallery, The Artful Bean, where I sell some of my jewelry needs new pieces. Plus, I'd like to have new pieces photographed for the shows that I'm submitting application for.

I'm hoping to be a little more productive this week...I just hate it when I loose days like that, or maybe the little, green men came down and abducted me? Who knows.

Bead Soup Ingredients Arrived

This go around, I'm participating in the Bead Soup Blog Party. In the past, I've just stalked the blogs of the participants, I guess third times the charm. I finally decided to jump in!

I was fortunate to be paired with Kristi Bowman-Gruel. I've been following Kristi's blog for some time, so I knew that she created amazing bronze focal pieces. Slip on over to her Etsy shop Dream Some and check out her work. That being said, I wasn't too surprised when my soup arrived and there was a bronze clay butterfly focal. Let me just tell you, the pictures just don't do it justice, it's totally awesome in person! I've never had the opportunity to incorporate any type of metal clay pieces in my work, so I'm over the moon about the bronze piece! The other "must use" component is the nice sized wood toggle clasp. Oooo...I love it!...but it's gonna push me over the edge, I'm definately stirring two pots, I think?

And now for the other goodies. Kristi must have known that I have a thing for lampwork beads. She sent some fantastic lampwork beads from Aspen Hot Glass, Palm wood rondelles, Picture Jasper, nice chunky, faceted Chinese Picture Jasper, faceted Carnelian...faceted just makes everything better...Yes?

Now...to get to work! I would have loved to play around with these today, but after the figid temps we have been experiencing, today there was finally a break in the weather. It was in the mid 40's and sunny! I couldn't bear to lock myself away in the workshop. In addition, the kids are on winter break this week, so instead we headed to the park for some bike riding and rollerblading. A much needed change.

As you know from my previous post, yesterday a friend and I had a metalsmithing session with Heidi Lowe. She's a fabulous artist, with a studio right on Rehoboth Ave., for those of you who are familiar with this area, and...it was Swweeet! She is SO super nice, and persnickety (in a good way) when it comes to details, a plus, plus. Anywho, when we arrived yesterday I had a couple of cabs that I wanted to set. I had drawn ideas of what I wanted, or my thoughts rather, in my new journal. One basic project and the other...well, I wasn't sure if I was being to ambitious. But, instead of her poo pooing my sketch, we just ran with it.

I jumped right in and started on two projects. One is a Drusy cab, that I am making into a ring, and the other a Peruvian opal, that will be made into a pendant. I've read a lot of books and watched a ton of tutorials on metalwork, so I was pretty familiar with what to do with measuring and cutting the bezel wire. Then sawing out the back sheet, hence the practice session, which I was SO glad that I did! But then, omg...all the filing and sanding. I think they purposely only touch on this part in the books. There is so much to do! and it's time consuming! At any rate, I was super happy with what I had accomplished in our three hour session.

The next session is Monday. I'm hoping to get some more sanding done in the meantime, so that I can get my projects close to finished during the next session.

Preparation

Last Wednesday, a friend and I were suppose to have a metalsmithing session with a local artist. But, then came the snow and ice, and our session was rescheduled:( Bummer! Alas, we have another session scheduled for tomorrow. I'm so giddy with excitement, I can hardly wait! So in preparation for tomorrow, I broke out my jewelers saw...which I haven't used in a LONG time, except to cut jump rings...and practiced, practiced, practice cutting...straight lines, curves, and 90 degree angles.

It took a little practice to really get comfortable cutting out shapes but by the end of my practice session, I was quite please with what I had done. I'm hoping for the same success tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

New Addition

Well, this past week was a total wash, as far as making jewelry goes...but it's all good. Instead, I spent the days getting to know Lucy.

We haven't had a dog in about 11 years, this was before we had kids. For a few years now, my daughter has been putting the full court press on us for a dog. Finally, we succumbed. On Tuesday, we adopted a dachshund. Lucy is about a year old, and just the sweetest little girl.

I'm looking forward to having her keep me company in the workshop.

A Creative Journal

Seems like journaling is all the craze these days. Some of the magazines that I like promote journaling as a way to jump start the creative process, and several blogs I follow note journaling as well. Recently I was reading an article that suggested you start journaling by simply noting five good/inspirational thoughts every day. Seems reasonable, but I still wasn't inspired to begin a journal. However, tomorrow, a friend and I will be taking a metalsmithing session with a well known local artist, and she strongly suggests keeping a journal. Ok...what could it hurt, I'm gonna give it a go. Then, the search for just the right book to journal in began...finally, I decided to purchase a small sketch pad and embellish the cover with a copper piece. I wanted something that would really inspire me...a kinda journal, sketch pad, note taking kinda book. Over the weekend, I decided to get started...with no thoughts really of what I wanted it to look like of where I would go with the copper piece...fly by the seat of my pants, if you will. This is what I came up with...

I stated with a piece of sheet copper cut to size, then broke out the hammers, stamps, and basically anything that would create texture. There are inspirational words stamped randomly around the sheet, texture everywhere, then I torched the piece in select areas to create a wonderful patina, while in other areas I used LOS. Finally, the sheet copper was riveted to the cover of the sketch pad.

This isn't the greatest picture, but I'm super please with the outcome. Now...to begin journaling.

Paying Off

Only a week ago, I compiled a list of items that I was committed to for the year. One of them being that I was going to update my Etsy shop more regularly. This is one of the few ways to establish some type of web presence. Due to the new listings in my shop, I am already starting to get some feedback. This week a couple of my pieces have made it into Etsy picks and a treasury.

This past Friday, I received and email notifying me that one of my pieces had been featured on a blog. Carola is a polymer clay artist, and makes wonderful beads, buttons, pill boxes, and a multitude of other neat gifts. She had featured my Masquerade charm bracelet in her Pretty in Pink Etsy picks for the week. Pop on over to her blog Polymer Clay Shed, were she showcases pictures of her jewelry and beads, offers tutorials, and features her Etsy weekly picks.

In addition, a pair of earrings, Right Round, made it into The Copper Age Treasury. A lovely treasury filled with beautifully colored copper, be sure to check it out. This treasury was created by rainestudios. She a girl after my own heart, what wonderful chain maille she has in her shop.

Commit

In an effort to come up with a Word for the Year, the last couple of days I've really pondered what I want to accomplish creatively this year. There were so many words that made it onto my list. I really wanted to come up with a word that is far reaching...one with a lot of bang. And then it hit me...Commit! There is a lot that I want to commit to this year, and it's totally attainable, as long as I stay committed:)

Now that I've come up with a Word for the Year, next was to start compiling a list of what to commit to:

Commit to holding "studio" hours. This will be a big step for me but I feel like I need it, both for my business and my family.
Commit to keep my Etsy shop up to date. Right now my goal will be to list one or two new pieces a week. I've already started working on this.
Commit to following through with projects that I sketch or imagine. I have a sketch book with lots of ideas and 9 times out of 10, I never even attempt what I draw. Crazy, pure laziness I guess.
Commit to really trying to zero in on trying to perfect my wireworking technique, and break into weaving.
Commit to do more chain maille, and learning more weaves.
Commit to taking metalsmith classes, and really following through with what I learn. Already scheduled a session with a local artist, and I'm totally stoked that I'll be doing the session with another jewelry/beady friend.
Commit to submitting at least three projects for publication.
Commit to talking to at least two more galleries/boutiques to carry my work.
Commit to learning to use my camera. I'm stuck on auto, but I know that I can achieve much better pictures.
Commit not to sit on the computer for hours on end. I've gotten really bad about this lately. The internet sucks me in and I have a hard time tearing myself away. Not very much creative time there.
Commit to sticking with what I have and not to go hog wild with any new technique. Not to say that I don't want to learn anything new, however I have to draw the line somewhere. I feel like I dabble in to much and need to really hone the techniques that I love...working with wire and metal.
Commit to finding a better way of keeping track of my inventory and bookkeeping. I know how to do the bookkeeping part but the inventory I could use a little direction.

This is a developing list of things that I am committed to this year. I'm sure it will continue to grow, but for the meantime it's a good start. As a daily reminder of my commitment, I'm planning on posting my list in my studio and maybe the office. Erin even suggested a banner, which I think is a great idea...a reminder.

Goals for the New Year

Alas, we have turned the page and started a new year, 2011, seems kinda funny to say. Today we were riding in the car and I was telling the kiddies about the date being 1/1/11. My poor daughter, she's only 7, but she just didn't seem to get it. Of course it probably doesn't help that she doesn't write the date as such, she always writes the month.

I've long given up setting resolutions for the New Year. It's not that I set resolutions that are unattainable, but rather my ADD kicks in and I quickly loose sight of the said New Year's Resolution in exchange for something that is more...instant gratification. So the other day while catching up on blog post, Erin at Treasures Found posted about having a word for the year, and several other blog friends have followed suit. This seems like a much better idea for me. Several words come to mind...too many.

These are just a few that come to me immediately, so I'm gonna brainstorm, really think about what words best suit what I'd like to achieve this year, and narrow it down to which one will best suit me creatively. But in the meantime, Happy New Year and may it be filled with creativity, good health, and prosperity.

A Birthday Surprise

I hope everyone is enjoying the hustle and bustle of the season. I know I am, the kiddies are on Christmas break and we've been making gingerbread barns, cookies, and catching up with our favorite holiday movies. Don't forget to take a breather though and enjoy the holiday.

Now, it's safe to reveal a couple other pieces that I created earlier this month. My cousin contacted me about making something special for my aunt, who just celebrated her birthday this past Friday. This is what I came up with...

A tutorial for fold-formed earrings were in the most recent issue of Art Jewelry. I love the fold-formed look and decided that these would be perfect for my aunt. I had originally planned on just oxidizing the copper. However, they were just so boring, that I broke out the enamels and the torch and went to town...SO much better.

For this set...I was looking for something kinda whimsical but meaningful.

I made these earrings a while ago, but included them in her package because I was told that she liked them.
These earrings were inspired by Mary Hetts book Wrap, Stitch, Fold, & Rivet.

I was unable to attend the party, but my mom did and said that she was happy with everything.

I'm finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!! Yippee!

It's still pretty cold, but I've braved the temps and gotten out into the workshop. I've been busy working on orders for Christmas, and today...success, the last order was completed and delivered. I won't be taking any more orders for this year. There are still some things that I'd like to make for Christmas gifts, but I'm not going to put any pressure on myself. If they get done, great, if not...no biggie.

This bracelet is very similar to one I had done before, different clasp and a lot longer. This is my first piece going to a gentleman.

This ring was learned from Lisa Claxton. Love all the texture and it's so easy to wear!

This little lovely was the only one to go that has beads. But that's okay...it will be loved just the same.

The kids last full day of school is Thursday, and we have lots of plans (I hope) while they're on break. Which also means that there is still a lot to get completed, and only two short days to get a long list of "to do's" done. Then, we're home free to make gingerbread houses, bake cookies, watch Christmas movies, do crafts...you get the idea. What fun activities do you do to get ready for the holidays?

Baby It's Cold Outside

Brrr...winter has sent in! It's early for us to be having such cold temps for this length of time. It might not be SO bad except that the wind is howling.

Friday night, we froze our tushy's off at the Christmas parade. My son's cub scout pack was in the parade. We were there early to help out putting the last finishing touches on the float. We were busy working, and the kids ran around. As the parade got started, we went to find a spot to stand while waiting to see the boys come by, and that's when it hit me...It was freezing! We made it through most of the parade, but ended up leaving early:( Just too cold!

Then Saturday, the kids wanted to go ice skating. Luck for us, the rink is inside at the Carousel in Ocean City, MD.

All of a sudden...Santa comes skating onto the ice. My son was enthralled with him, following Santa around, asking him all kinds of ridiculous questions. It was a hoot! but Santa was a good sport...God Bless him....but Santa wasn't such a great skater. Side swiped a couple kids, and ran into a few others, (try explaining that?) but he didn't fall.

Yesterday and today, I've been trying to get a few orders finished. But, I gotta tell you...BRRR...it's freezing in the workshop, and the little space heater just isn't cutting it!

It hard to work when your fingers will barely move. And even worse, I cut my finger with my saw, and didn't even know it. Yikes! I might just have to move inside for a spell.

Inspiration & A Treasury

Before Thanksgivings, Artbeads.com sponsored a "What Inspires You?" beading contest. The idea being that inspiration can be found anywhere. To participate you had to submit a picture of your inspiration as well as a photo of your finished piece. I decided to use a Van Gogh painting as my inspiration, “Olive Trees with the Alpilles in the Background.”

As young as my children are, at school they truly study art and techniques, specifically a handful of famous artists. I have learn so much right along with them, this is why I chose Van Gogh.

I created a charm bracelet to reflect what movement I felt in the painting...the clouds blowing across the sky and the rolling of the mountains. Then I pulled out the blues and greens that stand out.

Lovin' the Little Things

Ahhh...finally a few minutes to sit down and catch my breath. I've been running around like mad since the last time I checked in.

Thanksgiving was yummy and enjoyable. Not that it's not typically enjoyable...I think this year I had decided that I wasn't gonna get myself all tied up in a knot and stressed...and it will be what it will be! And it turned out fantastic...imagine that! That should be my new outlook I think...less stress would be nice. After dinner, I grabbed my little Christmas tree, turned on the Christmas music and went about tiding up my pool house, which doubles as my studio during the Artists Tour, to get everything ready to go for the big weekend.

The show was a great success. Friday morning, I was so busy buzzing around trying to get ready that I forgot to take any pictures. But the show was two days you say? Yeah...Ummm...same excuse for Saturday. Can you believe? So instead here are some items that sold...that I haven't shared yet.

I met so many wonderful new people and had a chance to chat with past clients, it's such a great time.

Now, to get in gear for the holiday season. There are tree's to decorate, shopping to be done, cookies to bake, and parties to attend! But, least I forget to enjoy the little things in life...like this gorgeous sunset, that I had the pleasure of enjoying last evening.

Raffle

I've shared in some previous posts about the Artists Studio Tour that I'm participating in this Friday & Saturday. Each year we all donate an item to be raffled off in the "Art in the Hat" raffle and the proceeds are donated to the art department at local schools. It's a great way for us to give back to the community, and it's a huge success. This is the piece that I created for this years raffle.

Chain Reaction - Sterling Silver Coiled Horseshoe Link Bracelet

I like this bracelet SO much, I almost hate to part with it (occupational hazard). At the same time, I'm pleased...I've had quite a few inquiries about this bracelet, and I've meet many new clients as a result of this being published in the brochure.

Thanksgiving ranks near the top of being one of my favorite holidays. We have so much to be thankful for. I'll be cooking and then a big weekend. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Earring Extravaganza

Hiding in the Thicket

Sometime ago, I purchased these lampwork beads from Beth Mellor. The color, as well as the rustic look is what drew me in. And then I received them in the mail...and WOW! they were SO much better in person. It appears that there is foil encased in the glass. It's like staring into the very soul of these beads...is that possible?...almost like you could see right through them. That blue is so vibrant, take a peek in and it will whisk you away to a tropical paradise, well at least it did me.

It's gonna be a busy month, but exciting! Typically November is busy anyway, the holidays are right around the corner, lots of activities going on at school, and preparing for the "grand finale"...the final art show of the year, the Southeastern Delaware Artist Studio Tour. And, this year there are a a few additional activities/events that I want to participate in.

If you're a follower, then you know that I'm a real list maker. I've got reminders and "to do" lists, in the areas I "hang out" the most. This helps keep me focused, as I do not work well under pressure. This is my calendar, it's just scratched out on a piece of scrap paper and posted on my "inspiration" wall in the workshop. This is a countdown until the studio tour, and other important dates listed on a post-it right next door.

Stephanie Lee's Homesteader's Metalsmithing e-course starts today. I'm totally stoked about taking this course! There are so many techniques that she will be teaching and lots of support from the Yahoo Group. So far there is a lot of positive energy among the "students," everyone is really excited to be getting started. If you haven't signed up yet and want to, registration is open until Nov. 15. It's sure to be a lot of fun!

Artbeads.com is sponsoring a "What Inspires You" contest. The idea that inspiration can be found anywhere. Just submit a photo of your inspiration and your finished piece by Nov. 22, 2010. This is one that I'm wanting to take part in as well. Check it out...there are BIG prizes up for grabs!

These are just a couple of the multitude of things that will be keeping me busy this month. Maybe I'll see you in the Homesteader's class or your creation in the "What Inspires You" contest.

The Hunt...

I don't know about where you are, but I'm SO glad fall has returned here. We had a couple of pretty, warm days for the end of October, so warm in fact that I threatened several times to turn the A/C back on. But alas, today is a wonderfully, crisp fall day. Which makes for perfect pumpkin picking weather and a scavenger hunt in the maze.

The Challenge...

Every month, I look forward to seeing the inspiration for the Art Bead Scene challenge. This month's inspiration is the Drama Medallion, displayed on Radio City Music Hall.

I don't know how I missed this on my recent trip to NYC, but I would have loved to see it in person. This piece of artwork is so inspiring for me. The colors and texture just spoke to me. I knew I wanted to create a piece with this as being the inspiration...whether I'd get to it before the month was over was questionable... At any rate, I'd been gazing at the medallion for a couple weeks now, and had a design in mind that was calling to me every time I walked into the workshop. So this is my interpretation...

Yikes, this really isn't the best picture, the copper looks kind dull, in real life it has a beautiful, shine underneath the oxidation. Anyhow...the copper pendant was created to duplicate the shape of the medallion, and there are smaller copper circles floating around in the necklace. The copper discs, which are textured, and the wirework, give this necklace a lot of texture. Then of course I had to add the fabulous colors. I'm thrilled with this pieces...especially since I didn't sketch it out first...that's like living on the edge for me. And to top it all off, I'm SO excited to be chosen as the designer of the week on Art Bead Scene Blog.

A Couple Special Requests

Ever have one of these weeks?...I have been busy but I feel like I'm not making any headway. I couldn't really pinpoint what I've been doing. Lots of little nit picky stuff but nothing big that I can cross off my "to do" list...except that I did clean my daughters room...that was an all day affair.

Except for a few stolen moments away, I've still not really had much time in the workshop. Well not to create jewelry anyway...I have had a few custom orders for my findings shop. I like doing special request for findings...I like to see/hear what others like to use in their designs, and I can sometimes get carried away and come up with a great idea. Here are a couple of the recent requests...

These are hammered sterling silver discs, and they could make great chandelier earrings, the bigger ones...don't you think? That's what I thought of as soon as I saw them. Might have to remake these to use in my own design, maybe copper...hummm...

Then there are these...slightly concave, hammered, sterling silver buttons. I like these too...again a remake for myself I think...when I get the time.

Ramblings

So, I totally lied...it's been such a busy week that I haven't had any time to enamel. I've barely had time to get out to my workshop:(

It's a little late but, I had a great show this past weekend. Such wonderful weather! A small show, only about 30 artists, but these are the best types of shows. I had a chance to meet new artists, and catch up with others. There's always plenty of time for meandering around and it's so relaxed. I was beside a great lady that made soap. What wonderful smells wafted over and soon enough I was over to indulge myself with a few goodies.

Have you check out the LMAJ blog? Such a talented group of jewelry artists, creating handmade with handmade. They are giving away a fabulous pair of earring crafted by Mary Jane.

Then there's the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Beads" Giveaway. I'd love to win this as well! I had lost track of the "traveling beads" until yesterday. Why is it that you always want to paw through somebody elses stash, or in this case destash.

Colors for Fall

Typically fall colors for me are rich reds, orange, browns, and neutral colors in general. I'm not a fashionista, and don't choose my wardrobe based on the trendy colors for the season...I just pick what I like, and based on the fit, of course. However, as part of the Artbeads.com blogging community, we were asked to create based on Pantone's fall color report. When seeing the trend setting colors, I was surprise to see such wonderful color...anything but the traditional fall colors.

What fun it was to add a splash of color. Most people automatically think falling leaves when they think of Autumn. So my first choice was to find a leaf pendant. Then, trying to stay with Pantone's Fashion Report, I choose various colors of Swarovski crystals.

Release

For the necklace, a cube Swarovski crystal and the leaf pendant are suspended from a larger size copper ring. Smaller crystals are woven into the tangled web of copper wire, alternated with a big round faceted Swarovski crystal. My handcrafted copper leaves hang from a Swarovski crystal to make these matching earrings.

Autumn Bliss

While hunting around Artbeads.com website, I came across this lovely brass toggle clasp that was a must have. For this bracelet I wanted to keep the clasp the focus. Glass beads and pearls are rotated with coiled brass wire and a couple Swarovski Cosmic Rings.

Storm Approaching

This ring was inspired by the most recent issue of Step by Step Wire. A ring similar to this was highlighted in the article about crystals. The color, Meridian Blue, doesn't really follow the color report but it seems to change color depending on how the light hits it.

And that is what autumn is all about...change...the changing from summer to winter...from vibrant colors to more subdued colors.

Addicted & Some Press

I've got somewhat of an addictive type personality. I find something I like...and I dive right in. This is just what has happened since returning from ArtBliss. I was having withdraws from the satisfaction I received from enameling. Thank goodness this time, I already had all the tools, just needed some enamels. A few enamels, turned into a few more until...I rec'd this colorful package in the mail from Fundametals.

OOooo...I was gitty upon picking the package up from the post office. I scooted right home, so I could drool in the privacy of my own workshop.

I'm still trying to figure out the best set up for my workshop. Enameling takes up quite a bit of room. Really just having to move everything out of the way to torch, and I like having all the enamels out, easy access. I'm wanting to set up a table specifically for using the enamels, but first I have to make room. UGH! Still working on that, but in the meantime, this is what I've done so far.

A couple pair of earrings. While practice makes perfect, I'm pretty pleased with the outcome of these.

In other news...I'm totally over the moon about the publicity I've gotten locally this week. About a week ago, the local paper did a brief interview regarding my participation in a local artisan fair. Just hit a couple high points, you know...I'm local, second year at this particular event, and the specifics regarding the show. Then the article was published...one of my pieces was on the front page of the paper advertising this event. It was small but it was still there. Then a nice, big picture of my piece beside the article, with a great plug for my business. I was so pleased...way more than I expected. Then, the other night I was perusing a local magazine when I noticed a piece in magazine that looked just like one of my pieces. Low and behold...it was one of my pieces. I guess they had photographed some of my work that I have at the art gallery. This was totally unexpected, but I was only too excited to come across it.

On the agenda for this week...you guessed it...more enameling. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

ArtBliss Recovery

I think, I've finally recovered from a wonderful weekend at ArtBliss. Cindy and Jeanette organized such a fabulous weekend! It was great to make new friends, meet "blog" friends for the first time, and catch up with other "blog" friends again. There was lots of socializing and even more to learn.

So much to do...not a moment to spare. Friday evening started with a bang. There was the Meet & Greet reception, where we got to meet fabulous artists, and see their wares. I really enjoyed talking to all the artists. And seeing their work really got me amped up for the workshops. Then there were all the great giveaways...I think everybody got something. I walked away with this great little Spitfire butane torch. I've already introduced it to "the collection" and I'm planning on putting it to use real soon.

Saturday morning was exciting. I could hardly wait to get to class. I opted for the "Hard Candy" class taught by Melissa Manley. OMG! She is the bomb! A fabulous teacher, we learned SO much, and had a great time doing it. I could have snatched the necklace she was wearing right off her neck...I loved it so...

We punched discs, enameled, and riveted our hearts out. My Hard Candy...

After a brief break for dinner, right back to another workshop with Melissa. This time using a rolling mill. It was a smaller class, which was really nice. We all got to talk, see what the other was doing, and we used our muscles! Met so many great people in this class. This is a little of what I did...

Gotta get one of these rolling mills...I'm thinking maybe an early Christmas present to myself...Whatda you think?

Then of course there was the trunk show. What fun it was to adventure from one room to another...chit chatting and buying all the while. By the end of the day, which was late, I was both exhausted and amped. While it had been a long day, I couldn't wait to get home so as to get to work.

Once again, thank you to Jeanette and Cindy for such a great weekend! And if you miss ArtBliss this year...you should definitely plan on attending next year. You won't want to miss it!

Hello Fall

It might be the first full day of fall...but it didn't feel like fall here. It was a warm, almost summer day. While I was out in the workshop, suppose to be packing my stuff for ArtBliss, I couldn't resist these lampwork beads. The warm temps and clear, blue skies and these newish beads kept calling my name. So I whipped up a quick bracelet with summer still in mind. I love this blue color, it almost looks like you can see right through it.

Tomorrow I'm headed to a superb event...ArtBliss!

I can hardly wait to get on the road. It promises to be a fabulous weekend, with a Meet & Greet Friday night, a full day of classes for me on Saturday...I'll be stalking Melissa Manley for the entire day...a charm swap...trunk show...and then Sunday back home to see my babies, who I'll miss SO much! I'll be rooming with Leslie Zabel...we had such a great time at BeadFest in April, we decided to do it again. I'm just hoping to squeeze in some sleep between classes and girl time.

Now off to pack...I still have to pack my tools, oh and my clothes. I'm running behind with the packing because of the bracelet and I wanted to get my house spic & span before I left.

Oxidized or Shiny?

That is the question. Everyone has an opinion. What is your preference? Does it depend on your mood...what your wearing, or do you only wear one or the other. I've never really had very many comments about the oxidation or lack there of, of the jewelry I create. However, at the art show this past weekend, there were several comments, and even a lost sale.

When to oxidize? I almost always oxidize copper to get that nice warm tone. But what about silver? There are certain pieces that I oxidized because it adds so much depth. The oxidation brings out the detail in the wirework and really makes the piece pop. Like this pendant...

And this necklace, the oxidation really shows the wirework well and provides a great contrast in color.

And then sometimes I oxidize...just because

But then again, I like to leave some pieces shiny. Sometimes shiny really makes a piece stand out. Bright, shiny silver provides great contrast against a darker colored bead. Such was the case when determining whether to oxidize this bracelet. I felt like oxidizing this piece would make it dull.

And then there is the case where I'm not sure which would be better. Like here...

The downfall to oxidizing is once it's done...it's done. You can always polish the piece and get off a majority of the oxidation but it will never be bright and shiny again. And I hate the polishing part, all those little piece of steel wool get stuck in the coiling, my hands are stained black and smell like metal for at least a day. However, I've recently learned that the polishing can also be done with a scotch brite pad...I'm definitely gonna try this.

The downfall to shiny...well for me anyway, is the photographing. I can't get a decent picture of a nice, shiny piece, like the above necklace. The shiny silver acts like a mirror, depending on the angle I get a reflection of my lens. And then there are the dark spots...very frustrating.

So what is your preference? Mine...shiny. I really gravitate toward a bright, shiny piece of jewelry, but then again it depends on the piece.

Couldn't Ask for Better

Okay, so Saturday was fabulous! I exhibited my wears at the Bethany Beach Arts Festival. I had a great, new location with lots of traffic, the weather was absolutely fabulous, and I was near the band. Yes, Yes, & YES! And Sunday, a little drizzly in the morning, we need rain desperately, and great day for working in the shop.

But Saturday didn't get off to such a great start. I was running later than I wanted, and then ended up chasing around a couple of our chickens in my skirt and wedge thongs, getting my feet all wet from the dew...I'm sure it was a sight to see (and hear) as I was already stressed out. But once I arrived at the venue, my morning did a complete 360. There was a new, rocking spot, and set up was a breeze! I've finally gotten set up down to a science. Good thing I had planned for plenty of time setting up...while the show wasn't officially to start until 10, by 9:30 it was SO busy! I didn't even get a picture of my booth without any people in it. And so the day went on...lots of people, browsing, buying, making conversation...before I knew it, it was time to pack up. I love shows like this!

Remember my silent auction bangles from the previous post? Go figure...my sister, who is SO dear for helping me out...Thank You, bid and won them. So I donated them, and ended up paying for them and carrying them back home to deliver to her. It was really quite funny when the volunteer brought them back to me. I was a little confused and couldn't understand why she was handing them to me...All I really saw was her handing them back to me...and not really listening to what she was saying. She must have thought I was a dope, but finally I understood what she was trying to tell me.

Sunday was a lovely, dreary day. Instead of focusing on the cleaning that my house needs, I ran out to the shop and got busy making a couple prototypes for the leaf charm swap that I'm participating in during ArtBliss. Sorry, no pictures, but I had a great time getting them hammered out.

I couldn't have asked for a better weekend. I hope you all had a great weekend as well.

Silent Auction Donation

Finally finished...the set of bangles being donated for the silent auction taking place during tomorrow's Arts Festival. Copper bangles with a few chunky dangles and stamped tags. The dangles hang below the wrist, but they have great movement without being a distraction. The bangles can be worn individually or together.

Busy Bee

Summer is quickly becoming a fading memory...days to lounge around the pool or beach, days trips, and play dates have come to a screeching halt. But all's good...and September promises to be a busy month. An art show this weekend, volunteering at school, 17 leaf charms to make, and ArtBliss (Squeal!). The best part you ask? I LOVE fall! Cool, crisp mornings, the fall foliage, and I consider this the absolute best time at the beach!

I've been all a buzz in my workshop the last few days. I've definitely got my groove on, but not with the traditional fall colors. Just take a look and see...

Here I go again...Love the lampwork beads in this bracelet. I agonized for quite sometime over how to incorporate them into a piece. I think it turned out quite well and I still have a couple left over...yea!

I'm still hoping to land a few more piece before Saturday, but in the meantime I still have to create a piece for the silent auction, photos to take, editing, tagging...all the boring stuff.
